Our wastewater treatment and collection system projects have included individual septic systems, wastewater treatment plants serving large communities, new sanitary sewer and rehabilitation of existing sewer systems.

Wastewater Treatment

Village of Holley Wastewater Treatment Plant Consent Order

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. prepared the Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey (SSES) for the Village of Holley in accordance with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Consent Order. Chatfield Engineers, P.C. also prepared the Final CMOM Plan that incorporated the findings and recommendations from the SSES.

The Village of Holley Village Board and Department of Public Works embarked upon an aggressive operation and maintenance program to minimize and/or eliminated excessive infiltration and inflow, improved the flow characteristics, separated storm sewer interconnections from the sanitary sewer system and constructed new storm sewers in various areas throughout the village.

The Report also evaluated the conditions of the existing sanitary sewers, the methods employed for making the evaluation of the system and determining the sources of problems including smoke testing, dye testing, internal pipe inspection (televising), individual manhole inspections and instantaneous depth measurements.

Village of Victor Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for the Village of Victor WWTP Improvements.

The Project consisted of the construction of two (2) vacuum primed pump stations (Wet Weather Bypass & Trickling Filter Re-Circulation), mechanical bar screen, and miscellaneous piping and electrical modifications to improve treatment.

The purpose for the Project was to improve the Wastewater Treatment Plant effluent quality and meet State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) limitations.

Wastewater Collection Systems

Town of Darien Sanitary Sewer Collection System

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Engineering Phase Services for the Town of Darien Sanitary Sewage System, consisting of the following:

  • 62,500 gallons per day Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • 21,000 LF of sanitary sewers.
  • Four (4) horizontal road borings under NYS Highways.
  • One (1) horizontal boring under Conrail Railroad Tracks.
  • Sanitary sewer laterals to 145 residents and businesses.
  • Coordination with the residents, local businesses, NYS DEC, NYS DOT, Consolidated Railroad Corporation (Conrail), and various other agencies.

Village of Albion Route 98 & 31 Sanitary Sewer

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for the Village of Albion NYS Route 98 and 31 Sanitary Sewer Project, consisting of :

  • 7,500 LF of 8” diameter sanitary sewers and laterals to residents and businesses along a busy stretch of State Highway, in the Village of Albion.
  • Pipe bursting and re-lining of an existing 8” diameter sanitary sewer.
  • Horizontal boring across GVT Railroad.
  • Coordination with residents, local businesses, NYS DOT, NYS DEC, and other various agencies.

Village of Oakfield 18-inch Outfall Sewer

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for the Village of Oakfield 18-inch diameter outfall sewer, which involved approximately 4,000 linear feet of sewer pipe, several manholes, construction of an access roadway, and an outfall structure.

This project required close coordination with the Village of Oakfield DPW, several residents, Genesee County Highway Department, and New York State DEC.

Village of Victor W. Main St. Sanitary Sewer Replacement

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for the Village of Victor West Main Street Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project.

This Project consisted of the replacement of approximately 2,100 linear feet of 8-inch sanitary sewer along New York State Route 96 within the Village of Victor. The existing sanitary sewer, located in the State Highway, with an average depth in excess of 10 feet, was replaced due to its poor structural condition.

This Project required close coordination with the Village of Victor DPW, residents, several local businesses, and various other agencies.

Village of Brockport Main Street Water & Sewer

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided Design and Constructioin phase engineering services for this project. The location was along Main Street between the north and south Village Line, and consists of the following items:

  • Water Main: Replacement of approximately 6,110 LF of 6-12” Water Main, fire hydrants, water services, valves and miscellaneous appurtenances as outlined in the July 10, 2006 Preliminary Cost Estimate prepared by Chatfield Engineers, P.C.
  • Sanitary Sewer: Replacement of approximately 5,370 LF of 8-16” sanitary sewer, sanitary sewer laterals, manholes and other miscellaneous items.

Sewage Pump Stations

Town of Greece Cedar Court Pump Station

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for the Town of Greece Cedar Court Pump Station, which consisted of two 25 horsepower submersible pumps capable of handling 1,080 gallons per minute at 55 feet TDH.

This new pump station replaced an existing pump station that was deteriorated due to age and wear and tear. The new pump station wet well is 10 feet in diameter and 28 feet deep. The Project included construction of a new valve vault, connection to the existing force main, valve pit, electrical controls, and other miscellaneous appurtenances.

Town of Greece Pump Station Study

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. prepared a Pump Station Study for the Town of Greece sanitary sewer pump stations.

The Town of Greece operates approximately 33 pump stations, which were evaluated by Chatfield Engineers, P.C. for operation and maintenance issues, structural integrity, controls and instrumentation, and emergency operation of the stations.

The Town of Greece Sewer Department has utilized the Pump Station Study to prioritize improvements necessary for each of the pump stations within their system.

Village of Victor Sewage Pump Station

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. provided the Design and Construction Phase Engineering Services for replacement of two existing submersible pump stations with aboveground self-priming pump stations.

The East Main Street Pump Station consisted of two 7.5 horsepower self-priming pumps capable of handling 200 gallons per minute at 50 feet TDH.

The Lynaugh Road Pump Station consisted of two 10 horsepower self-priming pumps capable of handling 150 gallons per minute at 66 feet TDH.

These Projects also included electrical controls, instrumentation, reconstruction of an existing wet well, replacement of an existing wet well with a new 8 foot diameter pre-cast concrete wet well, and other miscellaneous appurtenances.

These Projects required close coordination with the Village of Victor Sewer Department staff, several residents and businesses, New York State DEC, and other involved agencies.

Sanitary Sewer & Smoke Testing

Town of Brighton Sanitary Sewer System Evaluation Study

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. prepared a Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study for the Town of Brighton in 2005.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the problems associated with excessive Infiltration and Inflow in the central portion of the Town’s Sanitary Sewer System. This project included evaluation of flow meter data, smoke testing of sanitary sewers, preparation of cost estimates, public presentations, and preparation of a final report used as the basis for sanitary sewer improvements to the Elmwood Avenue Relief Sewer (Phase II).

Town of Irondequoit Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. field investigation work for the Town of Irondequoit 2006 Smoke Testing was to identify excessive infiltration and inflow (I/I) within the sanitary sewer system.

Approximately 56,525 Linear Feet or (10.07 miles) of sanitary sewer pipe in 95 locations.

As a result of this work a significant number of sources of I/I were discovered including broken laterals, broken or missing cleanout caps, illegal connections, and storm sewer connections to the sanitary sewer. These various sources added up to a significantly large amount of storm water that should not be transmitted to the wastewater treatment facility for further treatment.

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. coordinated with employees of the Town of Irondequoit Department of Public Works, residents of the Town and the local fire department. Marty Piecuch, Commissioner of Public Works, and Walter Becker, Sewer Foreman met with us to determine the areas proposed for smoke testing, and review the procedures for smoke testing.

Town of Penfield Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. field investigation work for the Town of Penfield 2005 Smoke Testing was to identify excessive infiltration and inflow (I/I) within the sanitary sewer system of Sewer District No. 3.

The Penfield Sewer Department operates and maintains an estimated 110 miles of sanitary sewer mains and 12 pump stations, which serve approximately 9,000 homes and businesses.

Approximately 43,000 Linear Feet (over 8 miles) of sanitary sewer was successfully smoke tested by setting up the blower at 66 locations.

Some observations made during smoke testing included: two catch basins tied into the sanitary sewer system, lateral pipes and/or connections that were broken, roof vent stacks that did not emit any smoke, cleanouts that were broken, some cleanout caps that were broken or missing, and smoke came into some homes and businesses. We also found large thumb hole openings in the manhole covers, loose fitting manhole covers, and manholes/covers located in low lying areas that have the ability to drain large localized areas into the sanitary sewer.

As the result of smoke testing, many sources of inflow were identified. We recommended that the Town of Penfield follow up with the problems identified during the smoke testing, further investigate the manhole conditions, and continue smoke testing in other areas in the future.

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. coordinated with employees of the Town of Penfield Department of Public Works, residents of the Town and the local fire department.

Village of Victor Sanitary Sewer Infiltration & Inflow

Chatfield Engineers, P.C. prepared the Infiltration/Inflow Study for the Village of Victor Sanitary Sewer System. In addition, Chatfield Engineers, P.C. completed the Village of Victor Capital Improvement Plan which included recommended sanitary sewer system improvements.

The Village of Victor DPW along with Chatfield Engineers, P.C. completed smoke testing, dye testing and televising of the sanitary sewer system.

During the process of smoke testing, a number of infiltration and inflow (I/I) sources were discovered. These consisted of broken laterals, open floor drains, roof leader connections, and storm drains. The sources of I/I that were observed can add up to a significantly large amount of water that does not need to be conveyed to the WWTP for further treatment.

Cracked pipes, separated joints, improper lateral taps, grease deposits, and other unseen problems can be evaluated with this method.

During the televising, one sewer section was found to need rehabilitation work and another sewer section was found to need mechanical grease removal.

These studies were utilized as background information and framework for several sanitary sewer and storm sewer projects.
